Liberal Vannin split widens

by isleofman.com 30th April 2012

Liberal Vannin MHK Zac Hall has issued a stinging criticism of his party's leadership.

In an open letter to chairman Roy Redmayne, Mr Hall accuses the party of Stalinist tendencies in the way it suspended him over the pre-school row.

The suspension followed the sacking of Mr Hall and north Douglas MHK John Houghton from the Department of Education and Children for failing to back minister, Lib Van leader Peter Karran, over the privatisation of pre schools.

A three page letter released to the media at the weekend, is an outright rebuke of both the party - and the policy.

In his letter Mr Hall describes the creation of the party as 'bold and brave experiement in party politics', but says being a member feels a bit like flying without a map or compass.

He claims there are no detailed procedures for suspension in the Lib Van constitution, and suggests party is being put before national interest in a centralised system of decision making which allows leader cult and veto to prevail.

He goes on to point out that the party does not have have a 'whip' system and does not oblige members to support a policy they don't agree with.

Mr Hall castigates party leader Peter Karran for initiating a privatisation policy without the agreement of any departmental members.

Mr Hall says his stand against pre school privatisation was consistent with his manifesto pledge to protect font-line teaching. By contrast he says the voucher system mentioned in the Liberal Vannin manifesto is open to interpretation.

Mr Hall concludes he will now consider how to best serve the interests of Onchan constituents and fulfill the MHK oath.

Party leader Peter Karran has refused to discuss the contents of Mr hall's letter.
