The Royal Navy is looking to the people of the Isle of Man, in particular those living in Ramsey, for inspiration.
HMS Ramsey, a vessel with enduring links with Ramsey and the third ship to bear the town’s name, is without a motto; this is set to change, however, after the Admiralty granted permission for one to be devised.
To this end the Royal Navy is inviting submissions from the people of the Isle of Man for a motto. The winning entry will become a part of naval history and remain the motto for all future RN vessels bearing the Ramsey name. The motto should therefore avoid any overt reference to the role of the current ship (mines countermeasures vessel) and be transferable to any future HMS Ramsey, irrespective of that vessel’s role.
Entrants may put forward as many submissions as they wish. Entries should be submitted in English, be unique and of no more than six words in length.
HMS Ramsey lieutenant commander Paul Ottewell said: ‘We’re looking for a motto that acts as a clarion call, a simple, inspirational expression of unity of purpose.’
Submissions can be made at http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/motto. Closing date for entries is Monday April 30, 2012.
