Laureate Tour Brings Artwork to the Island

by isleofman.com 23rd April 2012

The Family Library is to host an exhibition of contemporary children’s book illustrations curated by Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson.

The exhibition, featuring the work of 16 illustrators, will take place at the library, in Westmoreland Road, Douglas, from 8th May to 2nd June.

Mary Cousins, Librarian-in-charge of the Family Library, said: ‘You may have seen The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child on television last Christmas holiday and if you have anything to do with small children you’ll probably recognise the name of books such as Sharing A Shell, Zog, Room On The Broom and The Snail and The Whale. You might not know that Julia Donaldson wrote these stories as well as dozens of others and that she is probably one of the most popular writers of children’s picture books right now.

‘Julia has that magical ability that very few writers possess and seems to be able to capture children’s imaginations with deceptive simplicity and directness. The Gruffalo put Julia in the spotlight but all her books have been favourites of children and parents for many years.’

Falkirk Community Trust asked Julia to curate an exhibition of original artwork created for her books and the show proved so successful that this touring exhibition was organised.

‘This really is an amazing opportunity for the Island,’ Mary said. ‘It’s so rare to see original artwork created by illustrators and we really hope that everyone will come along and grasp this opportunity to see the work of such brilliant artists.’

The Family Library is planning activities throughout May to mark the exhibition, including craft sessions on Saturday mornings and illustration workshops for older children on Saturday afternoons 12th, 19th and 26th from 1pm to 3pm.
‘We’re hoping that there will be something for everything and we’ll have story sessions and things to do for everyone. You’ll be able to borrow Julia’s books, too. We’re very excited!’ Mary said.
