Robert Williamson, the Technical Director of the Communications Division of the Department of Home Affairs, retires today, Monday, April 16th 2012, after 22 years working for the Isle of Man Government.

Robert was presented with an illuminated certificate in appreciation of his many years of service by Minister for Home Affairs, Hon. Juan Watterson MHK.

Robert joined the Isle of Man Government in 1990 with the remit of establishing a Government organisation responsible for the provision of communications.

The Communications Division of DHA now has responsibility for the provision, management and maintenance of the Isle of Man Government communications infrastructure and systems including those used by the Emergency Services and other Departments of Government.

Robert, who was born in the Isle of Man, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering. He began his career in communications in the Merchant Navy with BP shipping. In 1979 he moved to the North Sea operations with BP as a communications engineer in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Robert commented: ‘The highlight of the last 22 years has been seeing TETRA and the Joint Control Room come to fruition and working successfully. It is still the best in the world and continues to attract worldwide attention.’

Minister Watterson paid tribute to Robert’s long service, stating: ‘Robert could be said to be the father of Government’s present communications systems. He has played a key role in developing DHA communications services over a significant period and leaves a strong legacy of sustained achievement. He will be greatly missed by all who have enjoyed working with him over the years.’
