DoI to Start Work on Black and White Kerbs

by isleofman.com 13th April 2012

The Department will be commencing work on Monday 16 April to repaint ‘Black and White’ kerbs at various locations around both the TT and Southern 100 Courses.  The works are planned to be completed by Wednesday 25 April, subject to satisfactory weather conditions.   In order to allow this work to be carried out safely, the following temporary speed limits will be in place:

50mph on the approaches to the work areas
30mph speed limits where work is actually taking place.

The locations of these speed limits will change on a daily basis as the work progresses, so motorists should look out for the signs and stay within the limits stated on them.  They are needed to ensure the safety of the workforce and will only be in place for the minimum time necessary to complete the work.

The Department is aware of comments and criticism about the need to repaint kerbs around the courses.  Whilst it is the case that the Department is currently responsible for doing this work, it is carried out in accordance with a Schedule provided by the race organisers.  This Schedule indicates the areas where edge lines and kerb painting assists competitors in safely negotiating the course.  In the past kerbs have been painted in accordance with tradition rather than to address specific safety needs. In the interests of minimising risk, the locations of painted kerbs and road edge markings have been fully reviewed by the ACU and painting is now only carried out in the locations specifically identified in their schedule.

The Department apologises for any inconvenience caused.
