Potential to expand the Isle of Man's Information and Communications Technology sector is to be explored at government level.

The Manx ICT Association has been lobbying the Department of Economic Development to gain the promotional backing currently enjoyed by the e-gaming and clean tech sectors and aviation and shipping registers, all of which have seen their profiles rise on the international stage as a result.

In a major step forward for the industry, political member at DED Laurence Skelly has been given responsibility to explore opportunities for growth within ICT.

There are around 150 ICT firms based in the Island offering services from data storage and bespoke software to computer hardware. They range from the smallest start-up companies to leading players such as Manx Telecom; and together are thought to employ up to 2,000 people.

Next Thursday 19 April, the Manx ICT Association will host a forum to discuss the new partnership, with DED minister John Shimmin heading a panel which will also include Mr Skelly and Director of Business Development Tim Craine.

The event will be held in the Sanderson Suite of the Claremont Hotel from 6pm.
