The Isle of Man Department of Economic Development has sponsored the prize for the University Spin-out of the Year at the New Energy Awards 2012, recently held at the Science Museum, London. This event showcased companies and individuals whose groundbreaking innovations will make a significant contribution to future clean technology.
The New Energy Awards, now in their fifth year, recognise and reward only the best individuals and companies committed to alternative sources of energy.
Dr Ken Milne, Senior Manager for Energy Policy, presented the winning prize to Ilika Technologies Ltd, founded as a spin-out from the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. They are currently developing innovative new materials for lithium-ion batteries, high capacity hydrogen storage materials, cheaper alternatives to platinum electrodes for use in fuel cells and thin-film photovoltaic solar cells.
Dr Ken Milne, Senior Manager for Energy Policy, commented:
‘This event fits with our strategy to raise the Island’s profile as an ideal location to attract clean tech businesses, to trial new technologies and protect intellectual property.’
One business that has recently recognised the benefits of establishing a business on the Isle of Man is R2 Powertrain. Being a spin-out from Cranfield University, R2 Powertrain operates as a Technology Transfer and Innovation Consultancy offering services to aid Universities who wish to harness the value of their research and intellectual property in the development of new ventures, products and technologies within the Clean Tech, Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicle and Motorsport markets.
Laurence Skelly MHK, Political Member for the Department of Economic Development with responsibility for Clean Tech, explained:
‘Sponsoring the award was an excellent opportunity for the Isle of Man to be represented amongst industry professionals. Through promoting the Island as an excellent location for Clean Tech businesses we hope that we will further attract dynamic, innovative businesses and entrepreneurs.’
