Douglas Goes the Extra Mile for Sport Relief

by isleofman.com 30th March 2012

253 people turned out on Douglas promenade on Sunday March 25th to enter the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile where milers of all ages were sponsored to complete one, three or six miles.

The day was a great success with the His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Ritchie McNicholl, acting as official starter for each event that saw friends, families and work colleagues joining together to go the extra mile for Sport Relief 2012, some dressed for serious competition, others as witches and superheroes…not to mention the odd canine.

Douglas town centre manager Gill Anderson said: ‘It was a fantastic day. Watching people come together to support such a great cause was brilliant and it showed what a great setting the promenade is for large-scale outdoor events. The Douglas Sport Relief Mile also provided an opportunity to promote healthy living and in this we’re grateful for the support of Up & Running who were on hand offer valuable fitness advice.’

Up & Running’s Chris Cale said: ‘We were really pleased with the response to the event and it was clear that there are a lot of people out there keen to raise their fitness – and pulse rate – levels. Events like these on Douglas promenade are a great way to introduce people of all ages and abilities to the benefits to be gained from gentle physical exercise.’

Sport Relief organisers estimate that more than one million men, women and children came together to walk, run or hop 1,3 or 6 miles at the hundreds of Sainsbury’s Sport Relief events that took place across the UK over the Sport Relief weekend.

The Sport Relief 2012 total currently stands at £52,070,587 with more still coming in.
