Triple win for Cooper sends him to stop of standings

by isleofman.com 27th March 2012

Cal Cooper shot to the top of the British Aprilia 450 championship standings after scoring a hat-trick of wins at Donington Park at the weekend.

The 15-year-old from St Jude's was involved in some of the fiercest racing seen in the championship’s history, his winning margins being just 0.070 seconds in race one on Saturday, 0.096 in Sunday’s opener and 0.318 in the final encounter.

Riding the JDF Racing-prepared Italian v-twin, Cooper was in brilliant form from the word go, clocking the second fastest time in qualifying, a mere 0.090 away off pole.

Speaking afterwards the Manx Sports Aid recipient said, "The racing was really close and I could never relax at any stage.

"In the final race I was in 13th at the end of the first lap but I was up to fifth next lap and just kept it pinned as best I could and steadily worked my way to the front.

"A big thank you to everyone who's been helping, especially John Davies of JDF Racing and my mechanic Big Dave Hewitt."
