The Department of Social Care are pleased to announce the demolition of the last few remaining post war housing on Janet’s Corner Estate to make way for the completion of a multi million pound investment in the area which has been in progress for over seven years.

This current phase of works received approval from Tynwald in June 2010 and involves the demolition of 62 houses and bungalows and construction of 77 new dwellings.

Hon Chris Robertshaw MHK Minister for Social Care commented:
“The final clearance of the older properties adjacent to Douglas Road is the most noticeable evidence of the works at Janet’s Corner estate and marks the final stage of a complicated project of renewal which started in 2005.  Since becoming Minister for Social Care I have taken the opportunity to have looked around Janet’s Corner and I am very impressed by the transformation it has made.  It has made a huge difference to the area and has delivered quality homes for the residents.  I am really looking forward to the completion next year.”

In the past week the contractor, Parkinson’s, have handed over 8 apartments on King William’s Way which are now allocated to applicants on the public sector housing waiting list.

When asked about complexities of this project, Debbie Reeve, Director of Housing, said that:
“Any refurbishment or redevelopment of property needs careful planning before hand to ensure the project runs as smoothly as possible.

The Janet’s Corner redevelopment is a fantastic scheme which has presented challenges along the way; for example the recent discovery of contaminated waste from under the foundations of the original properties has meant organising removal from site to the licensed tip at the Point of Ayre and this activity is likely to continue over the next month. This may have a short term impact on residents in the local area and on the transport route, as it could generate increased traffic and vehicle noise.

I would like to thank all the local residents for their patience during the works and also thank the team of people including housing staff, contractors, suppliers, and designers  who are working together to ensure that all goes smoothly and safely. “

This final phase of the project will deliver 59 new houses; including 22 first time buyer properties to add to the estate, all built to high standards of insulation and space standards.
