An escorted walk out to Conister Rock and the Tower of Refuge in aid of the RNLI has been organised by Douglas Development Partnership and sponsored by Tower Insurance.
Taking place on Saturday April 7, participation is free, although members of the RNLI will be on hand to welcome donations in recognition of the Tower of Refuge’s association with RNLI founder Sir William Hillary who, in the early 1800s, proposed the building of a sanctuary on Conister Rock for shipwrecked crews and passengers.
Douglas town centre manager Gill Anderson explained: ‘The Tower of Refuge is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Douglas. It’s also perhaps one of the least accessible. This event provides a rare opportunity for people to walk out safely under supervision to Conister Rock and be able not just to see but to get up close to the tower and learn a little of its history and the role it played in helping save lives, which is why all funds raised are going to the RNLI.’
Mrs Anderson added: ‘We’re also hoping to have an actor out at the tower reciting the poem “On Entering Douglas Bay” by William Wordsworth from which the Tower of Refuge gets its name. This is a unique event and, subject to the level of support it attracts, one that we hope will become an annual fixture in the town’s calendar.’

The event is open to all ages, although under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and instructions by the coastguards and stewards followed at all times.
Subject to weather and tide conditions the walk out to the Tower of Refuge is expected to begin at approximately 5.45pm, returning by 8.15pm.
