The newly named Celton Warriors have started the 2012 season in style, battling for the top spot in the Isle of Man Basketball League.
The team began the season with a new name and kit courtesy of their sponsor for the next three seasons, Celton Manx. The club, formally known as the Outback Hoppers, have been on fine form for the start of the season, grappling for the league trophy against their closest rivals the Cavaliers.
As well as gaining a new sponsor and kit, the team has also welcomed a new member in Celton Manx employee Brendon Goh, who has proved to be a great addition to the squad. Brendon has lived in the Island for three years and has been looking for the opportunity to join a local basketball team. He said: ‘I have played basketball from the time I was in primary school until I left college. My friends and I used to watch Michael Jordan and all wanted to be like him when we grew up! I feel lucky to have been given the chance to join the Celton Warriors and I’m really enjoying training and playing with them.’
Executive Director of Celton Manx Bill Mummery said: ‘Basketball is a very popular, global sport , so the sponsorship of one of the most prolific teams in the Isle of Man league is a good fit for us. It is fantastic to see the team performing so well at this early stage of the season and it is particularly pleasing to see Brendon integrating into the team so well. We will be watching their progress with interest over the coming months.’
Warriors coach, Colin Kirkham said: ‘We were delighted to secure the sponsorship of Celton Manx for the next three years. The sponsorship has allowed us to purchase new home and away kits and secure training facilities for the coming years. It has ushered in a new era for the team and we are really enjoying playing under our new name and colours. I would like to thank Celton Manx for all its support and hope that we can make them proud with our success in the league.’
