A collection of clocks and watches built up by the late Dr George Daniels is expected to fetch up to ?5 million at auction later this year.
Dr Daniels, who lived in Ramsey until his death aged 85 last year, amassed a large collection of clocks and watches, which is due to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in November.
He was regarded as one of the most important watchmakers ever to have lived, and the only person ever to have built every part of a watch from scratch.
The auction will feature 130 lots, many of which were built by Dr Daniels himself.
Sotheby’s says it expects huge interest in the sale – particularly in the Grand Complication watch Dr Daniels built in 1987, which is expected to fetch up to ?800,000.
Meanwhile, his 1982 Space Traveller timepiece, which displays phases of the moon, could sell for around ?600,000.
Also up for sale are three gold Millennium wristwatches, which could exceed ?100,000 apiece – dwarfing their release price of between ?25,000 and ?30,000.
Some of the items will go on a travelling exhibition visiting London, Geneva, New York and Asia.
All of the sale proceeds will go to the George Daniels Educational Trust, which supports students of horology, medicine, engineering, building or construction.
