Musical Accompaniment for Deli’s Diners

by isleofman.com 15th March 2012

Members of the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra will continue to celebrate their 15th anniversary year with a ‘listen while you dine’ concert at Tower House, Castle Street, Douglas, on Sunday 25th March at 1.30pm.

‘Our musicians are looking forward to performing at this venue,’ said Michael Morrison, Chairman. ‘Tower House promises to be an ideal location for a concert, having good acoustics, easy car parking and a relaxed environment in which to listen to music.’

Tower House is rarely used as a performance venue and the orchestra has never performed there. The idea for the concert came from David Paramour, of Franklin’s Deli, supported by the Douglas Development Partnership. David said: ‘The interior space within Tower House was originally designed as a performance venue and it will be good to hear the orchestra performing here. I hope other groups will perform here in future.’

The concert will enable diners to listen to music while enjoying Sunday lunch or light refreshments at Franklin’s Deli. Bookings can be made via 677002.

The orchestra performs a wide variety of music. As the concert forms part of its anniversary celebrations, it has opted to include numbers from its repertoire that are popular with players and audiences alike.

The concert will include themes from 633 Squadron and the Dambusters, music from the films Moulin Rouge, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Lion King as well as light classical pieces. The programme will also include the First Suite in Eb for Military Band, Gustav Holst Op 28, the theme from Family Guy and a compilation of Frank Sinatra hits.

As part of its anniversary year celebrations, the orchestra premiered ‘Pictures of Mann’, a special composition by Colin Touchin, at a workshop weekend held in February. It has plans for a formal concert to mark the anniversary, at which the piece can be heard again.

The orchestra has recently purchased a tuba and new percussion equipment, assisted by a grant from the Manx Lottery Trust.

Paul Dunderdale, Musical Director, said: ‘We are very grateful for the support of the Manx Lottery Trust, which has supplemented our own resources to ensure that the orchestra has a full range of instruments.’

The Isle of Man Wind Orchestra rehearses at Marown Primary School at 7.45pm on Thursdays during term-time. Membership is open to all woodwind, brass and percussion players. All are welcome.
