An Onchan construction firm’s been fined ?4,000 for breaching health and safety laws.
Corrigan Construction admitted five offences after working on a property in Crosby last April.
The company’s managing director disconnected and removed a gas hob despite not being trained to carry out the work.
In failing to seal off the pipework and test it for leaks, Corrigan Construction exposed the owners of the house and neighbours to the danger of leaking gas and the possibility of a gas explosion.
That, said Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes, risked public safety.
The health and safety inspectorate said the case highlighted the real danger of unqualified tradesmen carrying out work beyond their remit.
Two years ago, a similar incident in Manchester resulted in a gas explosion which injured 15 people.
Corrigan Construction was fined ?4,000 and ordered to pay ?200 costs, a figure the Deputy High Bailiff said would have been higher but for the company’s co-operation during the investigation.
