Alan Bennett backs library campaign

by isleofman.com 5th March 2012

A local campaign against the closure of mobile and family libraries is being supported by one of the great names in British literature.

Oscar nominated screenwriter, playwright, actor and author Alan Bennett has sent press cuttings and a handwritten message to campaigners here.

Alan Bennett, the voice of 'Winnie the Pooh' on many classic recordings, has described children as vital users of libraries and says the importance of free access to books for a lifetime cannot be underestimated – particularly for those without access to computers.

Angela Moffatt, negotiations officer for the union Prospect, described the support as 'pretty unexpected'.

There is an online petition to save the library services, as well as a facebook group.
