MHK staggered at drug service cuts

by isleofman.com 2nd March 2012

An MHK admits he’s staggered by the decision of government to significantly withdraw its funding for DASH.

From the end of August, the Department of Social Care will stop providing more than ?109,000 to the confidential Drug Advice Service and Helpline – that’s more than 80 per cent of its funding.

It means the body will close in six months time unless alternative funding can be found.

DASH supports drug users and their families, as well as providing education for schools, the youth service and community to reduce the harms caused by drugs.

Social Care chiefs say there’s cheaper ways of providing that service and that levels of uptake haven’t been as high as anticipated.

North Douglas member Bill Henderson is not so sure.
