Diesel investment defended

The Island's director of public transport says a new diesel locomotive is a necessary expense.

Ian Longworth says it's needed for a number of tasks, including pulling works trains to sites not accessible by road and flaying grass at the side of the track.

The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure is set to spend ?750,000 on the locomotive, a move which has been met with public outcry.

Mr Longworth says the diesel is also required to rescue broken down trains:
