Residents alerted to "payout" scam by OFT

by isleofman.com 24th February 2012

RESIDENTS have been warned about a new letter scam which advises people they are entitled to a lump sum payout.

The Office of Fair Trading has said the letter suggests that it has been issued by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The letter, which is headed with the logo used by the committee, asks for a number of personal details so that the alleged payout can be made.

It also asks for the consumer to keep the details of the correspondence confidential.

A spokesperson for the Office of Fair Trading said: "First and foremost remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't be afraid to put such correspondence in the bin."

Consumers are advised to consider discussing any contact or correspondence with friends and relatives or to seek advice from the Office of Fair Trading by calling 01624 686500.
