House of Keys candidate Nigel Dobson has told Manx Radio 'the justice system works' after being acquitted of making a false statement on his election nomination paper.
The 58-year-old was accused of not declaring a drink-driving conviction, for which he was banned and fined in 2009, when he unsuccessfully stood as a Liberal Vannin candidate in Garff last September.
The question on the nomination paper asked about any convictions which were liable to a custodial sentence.
Yesterday (Tuesday) a court heard Mr Dobson had never been made aware that a first-time drink-driving ban could lead to a jail term.
Magistrates accepted he would have had nothing to gain by 'knowingly' withholding details of his conviction, which had been very much in the public domain, on the radio and in the newspapers.
He was also awarded costs, the sum of which will be decided next week.
