THERE has been an increase in the number of reports of oil theft in the Isle of Man according to police.
Members of the public have once again been asked to remain aware of the risks and play their part in stopping thefts from happening.
PC Mike Radcliffe, the crime prevention officer for the Isle of Man Constabulary, said: "I would strongly urge that people ring the police as and when they witness any suspicious activity in and around oil tanks – day or night.
"Remember if it turns out to be a theft in progress any hesitation or delay in contacting us makes it highly likely that the thief will get away.
"I would also like to take this opportunity to remind householders and businesses to remain aware of the need to consider the security of their oil tanks.
"These criminals are opportunists - don't help them by failing to take some basic precautions."
PC Radcliffe has issued the following advice on keeping your oil tank safe:
• Can the tank filler tap be secured? Is it fitted with a suitable padlock? (Bear in mind that you will need to allow your fuel supplier access to the tank as and when they make deliveries).
• Do you have security lighting in the area of the oil tank?
• Have you could considered using hostile planting (e.g. thorny bushes) to deter offenders from trying to access the tank?
• Is the tank alarmed? Remote electronic oil level gauges are now available which will set off an audible alarm if the oil level suddenly drops or falls below a pre-determined level.
Homeowners have been urged to lock their gates to deter thieves from entering their gardens and have been told not to leave gardening tools out as these can be used to aid criminals. Residents have also been encouraged to think about joining, or starting up, a neighbourhood watch scheme in their area.
Businesses with oil tanks have been advised to check that the compound where the tank is situated is secure and that there are no weak areas along the site boundary where an intruder could gain access. Police have also advised extending the CCTV coverage so that it covers the oil tank.
