Planning, asbestos and cyber threats up for discussion in House of Keys

by isleofman.com 3rd February 2012

CYBER threats, the planning system and asbestos in schools are just some of the topics that will be discussed in the House of Keys next week.

There are nine questions for oral answer and 12 for written answer scheduled for the sitting which takes place on Tuesday, February 7.

East Douglas MHK Brenda Cannell will ask Chief Minister, Allan Bell MHK, to make a statement about comments he recently made about the Island's planning system.

In a public address last month the Ramsey MHK described the current system as "laborious" and argued that in order for the Island to achieve sustainable economic growth there had to be a system that included a "presumption in favour of development".

Fellow Ramsey MHK Leonard Singer will ask Education and Children Minister Peter Karran MHK how many schools in the Island have asbestos in their buildings.

He also wants to know what the department's policy is in relation to asbestos management.

Economic Development Minister John Shimmin MHK will be quizzed on cyber threats to the government and local businesses.

Onchan MHK Zac Hall will ask him about the department's strategy to counter such threats against "key Isle of Man economic organisations" and the data held by the government.

Bill Henderson, MHK for North Douglas, will ask Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw MHK whether his department has any plans to close any of its residential homes in the next year.

Rushen MHK Laurence Skelly will ask fellow Rushen MHK, and Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister, Phil Gawne about the Countryside Care Scheme.

He also wants to know if the Minister will make a statement on the sales performance of Manx meat in on and off Island markets over the last three years.

In the written questions – six of which are being asked by South Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft – Infrastructure Minister David Cretney MHK will be asked about area plans for the north, south, east and west, and Health Minister David Anderson MHK will be asked about the number of people admitted to hospital with lung conditions.

The House of Keys sitting will take place at 10am.
