by isleofman.com 1st February 2012

An inquest has heard a Douglas man committed suicide after a series of attempts to take his own life.

Stephen Anthony Dowling, 47, was found hanging in the stairwell of his apartment block in Kings Street on September 5 last year.

He was found by police officers who had called at his home.

They tried to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived but he later died in intensive care at Noble's Hospital.

The inquest heard Mr Dowling had been treated for mental illness for more than a decade and had alcohol and drug problems.

He'd tried to take his own life on a number of occasions and was being treated by a psychiatrist.

Coroner Jayne Hughes recorded a verdict of suicide and commended the police for their efforts.
