THE family of West End star Samantha Barks have said they are "over the moon" that she has been cast in the film version of Les Miserables.
The singer, who is originally from Laxey, has been chosen to play Eponine and will star alongside Hollywood stars including Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
Speaking to isleofman.com Samantha's father Richard Barks said it was an exciting time for the whole family.
He said: "We were absolutely over the moon when Samantha rang us last night. She told us that Cameron Mackintosh had made a surprise announcement at the curtain call of Oliver! at the Palace Theatre in Manchester.
"We have had so many calls and texts from friends and family it really is such an exciting time for her and us all."
Samantha is no stranger to the role of Eponine after making her West End debut playing the character in 2010. She was also chosen by Cameron Mackintosh to reprise the role for the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables at the O2 arena last year.
Mr Barks continued: "We are all so proud of her. She is so excited to have won the role - it is such a great part to play.
"She has been auditioning and screen testing for the role for many months now and has been up against such good opposition. It was so tough and she really has done so well."
Following the announcement last night (Wednesday) Samantha took to Twitter and described the news as the "most incredible moment of my life".
Richard said he was proud his daughter had put the Isle of Man on the map once again.
He explained: "It is always great to hear the Island getting a mention too.
"We seem to be doing so well at the moment and it is so refreshing that in this time of doom and gloom we continue to box above our weight on the world stage in so many different activities and sports.
"It is so good for the youngsters of the Island to see that anything is possible."
