Fire figures must be taken in context

by isleofman.com 1st February 2012

The Island’s Fire and Rescue Service says recent figures showing hundreds of Island properties don’t meet fire regulations may be misleading.

Assistant Divisional Officer John Murtagh says the figure of 328 houses and flats is an accurate one – however, a good proportion of those are currently unoccupied.

And he says many fail to meet standards on a technicality rather than directly threatening the safety of residents.

Mr Murtagh says the service deals with breaches in an appropriate way, according to how serious they are.
