A WORKING group has been set up by the Council of Ministers to establish how the Island plans to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee.
Friday, July 6 – the day after Tynwald Day – has been confirmed as an extra bank holiday so that local residents can take part in community events to mark the occasion.
Community, Culture and Leisure Minister Tim Crookall MHK, the chairman of the working group, said: "As a proud British Crown Dependency we will be joining in the celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth who is our Manx head of state and Lord of Mann.
"This unique occasion will provide an opportunity for neighbours and friends to get together for a fun day out in much the same way as they did for last year's Royal Wedding.
"We are asking people to let us know what they have in mind in terms of community celebrations so that we can get a flavour of what is being proposed and also help to publicise any special arrangements."
The Isle of Man will also host a visit from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales as part of a family tour of the Commonwealth countries this year although a date for when this will happen is yet to be confirmed.
Any individuals or organisations who are planning to stage an event to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee are asked to contact Ann Craine, secretary to the working group, by e-mailing ann.craine@cso.gov.im or by calling 01624 685211.
