Next Collector of Customs and Excise appointed

by isleofman.com 27th January 2012

THE Treasury has announced who will become the Island's next Collector of Customs and Excise.

Charles Coué, who has been Deputy Collector since 2007, will succeed Denis Maxwell who retires in July 2012.

The Collector is the head of the Treasury's Customs and Excise Division which is responsible for indirect tax revenues.

These include VAT, duty on petrol, spirits, tobacco, customs duty and APD – which provide more than half of the Isle of Man Government's income.

The division also has a number of law enforcement functions, administers the local application of international sanctions and provides advice and services as well as operating the Island's Entry Processing Unit which is a key facility for developing the Isle of Man as an international trade hub.

Mr Coué brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position having served in a variety of roles within the Customs and Excise Service since joining the Division in 1986.

Educated at King William's College, Mr Coué entered the Isle of Man Civil Service in 1978 first joining the then Assessor of Income Tax Division.

Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK said: "I am delighted with Charles' appointment having seen at first hand the expertise and commitment he has already demonstrated as Deputy Collector.

"I am confident that he will lead the Customs and Excise Division well, both locally and internationally.

"We have a skilled and professional team of officers within our Customs and Excise Division who I know will work with Charles to continue to provide a first class service to the Island's business community, taxpayers and the general public."

Mr Coué said: "I am delighted and honoured to be appointed Collector Designate and I am proud to be given the responsibility to lead the division's talented and dedicated staff through what will undoubtedly be challenging times ahead."
