THE next phase of the Douglas regeneration project will start at the end of this month to enhance a section of Wellington Street between the Slug & Lettuce public house and Market Street.
The regeneration works - which start on January 31 - will involve the replacement of the tarmac footway and carriageway with high quality, natural stone paved, shared surface roadway.
During the works the opportunity will be taken to improve highway drainage and the electrical supply to the street lighting. This work will build upon the regeneration works carried out last year and will enhance pedestrian accessibility on this busy route to the town centre from Shaw’s Brow car park and the businesses premises adjacent to Athol Street, Upper Church Street and Circular Road.
The construction cost for the works is £95,000 and, when the scheme is completed in mid-April 2012, subject to good weather, the surface finishes will be similar to those installed on Upper Nelson Street in 2011.
The Department has worked closely with the Douglas Borough Council and adjacent landowners to ensure that planned enhancement works to the street lighting, building facades and boundary features are encouraged as part of these regeneration works.
Minister for Infrastructure and chairman of the Douglas Regeneration Committee David Cretney said, “I am pleased the next phase of Douglas regeneration works have commenced after the break which was planned to accommodate the Christmas retail trading period.
“I look forward to delivery of the Lower Nelson Street, Lower Wellington Street and Duke Street regeneration schemes later this year.”
While these works are in progress, Wellington Street will be subject to the following traffic restrictions:
• Wellington Street between the Slug and Lettuce and the Marks and Spencer car park exit will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicle delivery access for the duration of the works.
• Pedestrians will be able to gain access to the shops and businesses on Wellington Street from the Duke Street/Wellington Street junction.
• Delivery vehicles will be able to gain access to the shops and businesses on Wellington Street from the Duke Street/Wellington Street junction.
