Call for more people in the Island to eat breakfast

by isleofman.com 12th January 2012

A LOCAL mushroom farm is encouraging people in the Isle of Man to take part in a breakfast campaign called "Shake Up Your Wake Up".

Greeba Farm Mushrooms is supporting the national campaign, which is part of Farmhouse Breakfast Week, which runs from January 22 to January 28.

The campaign, which is run annually by HGCA, is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and to demonstrate the variety of breakfast foods available.

The theme for this year's campaign – Shake Up Your Wake Up – encourages people to make small changes to their morning routines to ensure they have time for breakfast each day.

According to experts it is important to eat breakfast because it helps aid concentration and mental performance at work and at school and provides the nutrients and energy needed for an active lifestyle.

Research has also shown that those who eat breakfast are less depressed and less stressed than people that don’t.

Greeba Farm Mushrooms will use Shake Up Your Wake Up stickers on all packs of mushrooms on sale during Farmhouse Breakfast Week to highlight how mushrooms can become a breakfast staple.

Mushrooms are a nutritious and healthy ingredient which can help to provide a balanced breakfast. They are full of vitamins and minerals and a good source of vegetable protein as well as being virtually fat free.

Kathy Irwin of Greeba Farm said breakfast was a key part of the day on the farm. She explained: "Starting the day together has always been important to us.

"Whether it is sitting down with your family, starting a business day combining meetings with breakfast, or catching up with friends after the school run over a coffee and a bite, it all counts to put you in the right frame of mind and refreshes your body to have a good day."

Greeba Farm has recommended a number of ways of incorporating mushrooms into breakfast time including making a Manx mushroom muffin, Portabella mushrooms with eggs Benedict or locally produced sausage, bacon and eggs served on a flat mushroom.
