Faulty tumble dryer causes Port Erin garage fire

by isleofman.com 11th January 2012

FIRE crews from Port Erin spent two hours tackling a fire which had started in a garage on Monday (January 9).

They were called to the property on Fairway Close in Port Erin at 12.08am after reports of smoke issuing from the garage door.

On arrival firefighters were forced to enter the garage through a rear window as the main door had lost power due to the fire.

Wearing breathing apparatus and using a high pressure hose reel the firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and open the garage door to allow for a vehicle parked in the garage to be removed.

Another team of firefighters entered the garage once the door was open to assist and the fire was brought under control by 12.45am.

Firefighters stayed at the scene until 1.50am to ensure the scene was safe, isolating power supplies and removing debris to check for fire spread.

An investigation by fire officers found the cause of the fire to be traced to a fault with a tumble dryer.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has reminded residents to be aware of the risks associated with electrical appliances. For more on this click here.
