Boost for shop owners in Ramsey

by isleofman.com 10th January 2012

SHOPKEEPERS in Ramsey could receive a boost due to the extension of the regeneration area boundary.

It will now include the 'retail zone' at the western end of Parliament Street, a move that will give more shop owners and tenants an opportunity to apply for funding.

The government has said Ramsey's private sector has readily embraced the merits of the scheme, with several companies and individuals lodging successful bids for regeneration grants.

Awards have been approved for a wide range of improvements including the painting and repair of shop facades, the installation of windows and canopies and new signage.

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK, who is also chairman of the Ramsey Regeneration Committee, said: "We are continuing to push ahead with ideas to help our retailers and to create a more attractive, welcoming and vibrant town centre.

"The extension of the regeneration area will open up the possibility of funding to more shop owners and I hope they will submit applications and get on board with what we are trying to achieve.

"Improvements to shop fronts and signs are small but important steps in the process to maximise the appeal of Ramsey's main shopping area.

"I am delighted that so many retailers have applied for and received funding as it demonstrates a positive commitment to the regeneration of Ramsey.

"Together with the recent redevelopment of The Lanes, the creation of additional parking, and the proposed work around the Courthouse, we are starting to see some real progress."
