Cup goes to form

by isleofman.com 7th January 2012

Colby came close to causing a surprise but in the end there were no shocks in the preliminary round of the Cu-Plas FA Cup.

The mid-table Second Division southerners looked like they could cause an upset before a second half goal from Gary Quirk fired Old Boys through at Blackberry Lane.

League champions St George’s hit 14 past Malew to expose the gulf in class between the top flight and Division Two.

Four goals each from Callum Morrissey and Conor Doyle, doubles from Conor Dempsey and Ciaran McNulty and one each from Chris Bass and Johnny Myers - from the penalty spot – sealed the rout.

Mark Wolfenden was the star of the show as Castletown ran out 3-1 winners over Ramsey Youth Centre at the Stadium.

He hit a hat-trick to secure the southerners a place in the first round.

Mark Faragher replied for Youth Centre.

There was another treble at Ballafletcher as Lewis Thornton scored three to help Corinthians see off Michael 4-2.

Darren Cain grabbed the other.

Conrad Kumar also netted a hat-trick of his own but ended up on the losing side as Douglas & District went down 6-3 at Douglas Royal.

Union Mills turned on the style in the clash of the leading Division Two sides.

They secured an emphatic 5-0 victory at Marown, courtesy of Lee Christian (two), Karl Dobbin, AJ Suckling and Kenny Magee.

St John’s were comfortable winners in the first Manx cup tie on grass played under floodlights.

Goals from Steven Glover (three), Nick Hurt, Michael Peace and Andy Glover saw off Ronaldsway 6-0 at Mullen-e-Cloie.
