'Fantastic' turnout for Breakthrough dip

Hundreds of people took part in the traditional New Year's Day dips around the Isle of Man.

The weather was mild but the sea was very cold, with ensured a bracing start to 2012.

In Peel, where the tradition began in 1983, a stampede down the beach set off at noon.

The annual event attracts big crowds, and over the years has raised ?140,000 for charity.

In the south, dips took place in Port St Mary, Port Erin and Gansey, while hardy souls strode into the sea in Laxey, Castletown and Ramsey during the afternoon.

Angie Aire organised a new dip in Douglas Bay in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
