New Rushen MHK giving Dhone speech

by isleofman.com 2nd January 2012

The traditional salute to a Manx nationalist is being made today (Monday) at Hango Hill, Castletown.

The execution of Illiam Dhone, or William Christian, is commemorated each year at the coastal spot where he was shot on January 2, 1663.

He is widely held to have played a key role in preserving Manx independence by preventing the Isle of Man being given back to the English Crown.

The ceremony, at 2pm, has been organised by the Manx nationalist party Mec Vannin, with speeches in English and Manx, followed by a wreath laying and church service at Malew.

Laurence Skelly, who became a member of the House of Keys for Rushen in September, will give the address in English.

His speech will reflect on the lessons a man he regards as a true Manx patriot can offer society in the 21st century (first part of audio file):

Mr Skelly says much argument has taken place over many years as to how Illiam Dhone should be remembered in the history books, and it's time to banish any suggestion he wasn't a true martyr:
