THREE Isle of Man residents have won awards in the Queen’s New Year Honours List, announced today.
Edwin ‘Eddie’ Davies, born in Salford but lives in Ballasalla, who is well known both on and off the Island, has received a CBE for charitable services to add to his existing OBE which he won for services to industry in 2000.
Eddie Davies is chairman of the Strix group and is heavily involved as a major shareholder and director of Bolton Wanderers premier league football team.
Meanwhile, MBEs have been awarded to Mrs Elaine Christian JP of Douglas and Catherine Christian of Ramsey.
Elaine Christian has been a JP for 27 years, serving with distinction on the Magistrates and Juvenile Benches. She is currently vice chairman of the IOM Magistrates Association. From 1985 until 2009 she was a member of the Independent Monitoring Board for the IOM Prison (Chair from 2002).
She also helped set up David Gray House and has been a member of the Hostel Advisory Committee for 16 years. A founder member of Victim Support IOM, she remains on the management committee of the charity. She is also a committee member of the Manx Courts Mission, a Methodist local Preacher, President of the Methodist Women’s Network and has a lifelong interest in music, and conducts a choir – Encore
Catherine Christian has become the voice of young people in Ramsey and has been involved in Beryl’s Bus project in Ramsey from its inception in 1995. The project grew into the Ramsey Young Peoples Project and continues to this day as ‘The Shed’.
Mrs Christian also works tirelessly as a devoted youth worker in Ramsey and her friendly intervention is recognised as helping to prevent the development of social problems in the town.
