'Keep those smoke detectors working'

by isleofman.com 28th December 2011

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is reminding people not to take batteries out of their smoke alarms to power Christmas presents.

It follows a blaze at a flat in Michael Street in Peel on Christmas Eve, from which residents escaped safely after their smoke detector warned them of the danger.

A spokesman for the fire service said in that incident the alarm meant occupants had time to call the emergency services.

The advice is to test alarms once a week to make sure they are working properly.
