Increase in calls from mentally unwell

by isleofman.com 23rd December 2011

Samaritans in the Isle of Man are preparing for what's traditionally their busiest time of year.

A group of committed volunteers will be on duty over Christmas and the New Year, offering a listening service, by phone and email.

Christmas can prove a difficult time for many, when family relationships are put under strain.

Amid the celebrations, anxieties about the future, work or finances can be brought into sharp focus, and the festive season can also prove difficult for those who have lost a loved one.

Director of the Island's Samaritans Sylvia Hall says recently, more callers suffering mental illness are making contact (listen to audio file below):

Samaritans can be contacted by emailing jo@samaritans.org or ringing 663399.
