The Manx government is being told how it could save around a million pounds of the three million pounds a year it currently spends on criminal legal aid.
The Isle of Man Law Society says it shares the concerns of Treasury Minister Eddie Teare over the sums being spent to maintain the present system.
Society president Jason Stanley believes significant savings and improvements could be made, and he has identified one area in particular.
He says, of all the trials involving legal aid for which dates were fixed in the last year, only ten per cent went ahead:
