by isleofman.com 2nd January 2012

MANX missile Mark Cavendish won the men's Road Race World Championship in Copenhagen in September.

The cyclist became only the second British rider to ever take the title – the first being Tommy Simpson in 1965.

Speaking after the race Cavendish said: "I'm really proud. This has been a three year project for us. Ever since the course was announced we have been preparing for this.

"Not just me but all the guys who rode so well and others committed to making sure we qualify a good team.

"A world title is something special and I'm going to wear the rainbow jersey with pride over the next year."

The then Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK congratulated Cavendish on his success and said: "Mark Cavendish is a global sporting phenomenon and the achievements of this amazing young Manxman are a matter of national pride back home in the Isle of Man.

"On behalf of the whole Island I would like to offer the warmest congratulations to Mark on becoming world champion and wish him continuing success in his astonishing career."
