CHRISTMAS can be a time for incidents of domestic abuse, caused by financial and emotional stress, and Isle of Man police are encouraging victims not to suffer in silence.
Police are aware that the holiday season can see simple arguments escalate out of control into domestic violence and annually see reports of abuse double over Christmas and New Year.
In a statement issued over the weekend, police said, “We are ready to offer advice and help when needed.”
However, the police are also aware that a lot of domestic abuse incidents are not reported. Victims - who are almost 100% female - live in fear of further repercussions and even harsher violent attacks, if they were to report a case. But police say they can offer support to victims to escape from the violent behaviour.
“Domestic abuse is largely under reported with only around 35 % of incidents disclosed to the police, so officers hope to see a rise in the number of crimes reported to them over the festive season.
“Any rise in numbers has a positive side as it means that more victims have the courage and confidence to come forward. They also aim to reduce the level of seriousness of incidents and reduce the number of repeat incidents.
“Domestic abusers are cowards. They inflict pain and suffering on those closest to them who are least likely to report to the police.”
The police statement adds, “The message from the Isle of Man Police is clear. We will support victims to escape the violent and / or abusive behaviour that they endure at the hands of their partner and hold the perpetrators responsible.”
Anyone who has been, or who is currently, the victim of domestic abuse or has any information regarding incidents is encouraged to speak confidentially to any police officer or Police headquarters on 631212.
