February 2011: Trevor Baines sentenced after being found guilty

by isleofman.com 26th December 2011

ISLAND businessman Trevor Baines was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in February after being found guilty of stealing almost £900,000 from a trust fund.

His wife Wendy Baines was also sentenced and received an 18 month sentence for obtaining £400,000 by deception.

The sentences were handed down on February 25 at Douglas Courthouse.

The convictions stem back to the Baines' money laundering trial in 2009.

At the time of sentencing Mr Baines was serving a six year sentence for money laundering and false accounting. The two and a half years was added to that to run consecutively.

The Baines' solicitor Jenny Holt, who was convicted of one count of money laundering and two of creating false records at her trial in January, received a 12 month prison sentence which was suspended for two years.

Update: In June Jenny Holt failed in a move to overturn her conviction. For more on this click here.
