February 2011: Island gets direct air link with North Wales

by isleofman.com 26th December 2011

MANX2.com announced plans for a direct air link with North Wales in February.

The announcement came after Manx2.com won a four year contract to operate flights between Anglesey and Cardiff.

The contract was awarded by the Welsh Assembly Government after Manx2.com successfully operated the route for seven months in 2010.

Noel Hayes, chairman of Manx2.com, said: "We had great feedback on the short season we operated last year and so are delighted to again be able to offer passengers a unique opportunity to visit Anglesey this year for over three months.

"This summer season special is perfect for those who are keen to experience all North Wales has to offer - whether it be for a weekend break or the chance to reconnect with friends and relatives.

"We were greatly encouraged by the support of RAF Valley, Isle of Anglesey County Council and all our Welsh contacts and look forward to continuing to bring the Manx2.com formula so successfully to Wales for 2011."

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister and Minister for Economy and Transport for Wales said: "The return of this link over the summer months is good news for tourism in North Wales and is good news for the airport itself and I'm sure it will be welcomed by many.

"North Wales has a great deal to offer visitors, as does the Isle of Man, and I'm pleased to see that this Manx2.com commercial flight will operate again this year."

Clive McGregor, leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council, said: "I'm pleased Manx2 has decided to run this service again. It proved to be very popular last year and it means that we can get to know our Celtic neighbours on the Isle of Man a bit better as well as potentially bringing more visitors to us here on Anglesey."

Update: Flights departed from the Isle of Man twice a week on a Monday and Friday from June until September. Passenger figures for September 2011 showed that 51 people used the service compared to 42 people in September 2010.
