A new book has been launched, recounting in great detail the dissolution of the monasteries in the Isle of Man.
It's mainly written by archeologist Dr Peter Davey, using material gathered by the late Jim Roscow, from the 1980s to his death in 2005.
The dissolution of the monasteries was the disbandment by King Henry VIII of all the monasteries, priories and convents in the British Isles, the disposal of their assets, and the appropriation of their income for the Crown.
The two establishments affected in the Isle of Man were Rushen Abbey and the Nunnery, known at the time as Douglas Priory.
The book contains a large amount of historical data for the three years from 1540, including all the items King Henry's men removed from the two establishments (listen to audio file below):
The book is published by the Manx Natural History and Antiquarian Society.
