Population rises by nearly 4,500

THE population of the Island has risen by nearly 4,500 in five years.

 

The provisional results from the 2011 Census, conducted on March 27 this year, show the Island's resident population was 84,497 - an increase of 5.5 per cent on the 2006 Census figure of 80,058.

 

The number of people in employment has increased by 2,349 - 5.8 per cent - while the number of unemployed people seeking work has also increased.

 

At the time of the 2006 Census there were 1,010 people seeking work and this rose to 1,475 in the 2011 Census.
