THERE will be no bus services in the Isle of Man on Boxing Day this year.
Tim Crookall MHK, the Minister for the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, confirmed his department's decision in the House of Keys this morning (Tuesday).
He said the cost of providing a bus service on December 26 could not be justified.
Mr Crookall said: "The timetable published in April this year contains a note on page eight that there will again be no services on Boxing Day.
"This decision was made after confirming that major retailers are again planning to be closed on this day.
"With little shopping traffic and premium pay for drivers the department concluded that the limited demand did not justify the cost of providing a service.
"With the budget cuts we have had we have to make difficult choices and that is one we have made."
North Douglas MHK John Houghton, who raised the matter with Mr Crookall, asked the Minister if he had thought about providing a small skeleton bus service to allow people to visit their families.
Mr Crookall replied: "I have reviewed the situation and whilst I appreciate some people will be put out it is an expense I'm not prepared to go to."
