A candidate for the vacant seat on the Legislative Council says the upper chamber of the Manx parliament has always been 'a critical friend of the Keys'.
Former meteorological officer Brian Rae is one of two people contesting the position, which became vacant when Clare Christian was appointed president of Tynwald at the July sitting.
Mr Rae has been involved in local politics for some time, but says he only put his name forward for LegCo after he was approached by a group of MHKs in the south of the Island.
On Mandate today (Wednesday) he said he had always felt former MHKs made the best members of the Legislative Council.
He also said he had yet to be persuaded that a popularly elected LegCo was the right way to go (listen to audio file below):
The Legislative Council election will take place at a special sitting of the House of Keys on Monday, December 12.
The other candidate is Tony Wild, who is head of priority services at Standard Bank Isle of Man.
