THE Russian Ambassador to the UK visited the Island last week to help strengthen links between the Isle of Man and Russia.
His Excellency Dr Alexander Yakovenko visited the Island for two days accompanied by his wife Alexey Dobrinskiy.
The Isle of Man Government has said Dr Yakovenko's visit continues its policy of "proactive engagement with other nations" in order to promote the Isle of Man to the international community.
During his visit the Russian Ambassador gained an overview of the Island's economy, culture and constitutional position during meetings with the Chief Minister, Economic Development Minister John Shimmin and other civil servants.
Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK said: "I am delighted that His Excellency agreed to visit the Isle of Man.
"Russia has been a good friend to the Island for a number of years and it was only right that Ambassador Yakovenko was among the first to visit our new government.
"It is my intention to raise the Island's profile internationally and I look forward to developing a closer relationship with Russia in the future.
"During our discussions I believe we have identified a number of opportunities to build on - not only economic but also cultural and sporting."
Dr Yakovenko said: "Russia is currently experiencing a good rate of economic growth despite the global downturn and is always looking to develop new partnerships.
"I have been impressed by the diversity of the Isle of Man's economic offering in particular its hi-tech manufacturing sector, space activity and clean-tech industry.
"Strengthening our co-operation with the Island will help to create mutually beneficial opportunities in these areas."
As well as attending a number of official engagements the Russian delegation also visited a number of Manx National Heritage sites.
