Garrett wins Syd Quirk Half Marathon - PICTURE SPECIAL

by isleofman.com 28th November 2011

MIKE Garrett was the winner of yesterday’s Syd Quirk Half Marathon, winning by almost a minute from Lloyd Taggart on a blustery day with a record entry.

Staged on the roads around Ballasalla, Ballabeg, Castletown and Ronaldsway, the race left the winner with a dilemma, as he was supposed to present the trophy himself, being an employee of the event sponsor Haldane Fisher.

President of the Vets Club Colin Watterson stepped in to make the presentation to Garrett who was delighted to beat Lloyd Taggart, leader of the race for much of the distance. Third place went to Tom Cringle who beat off the challenge of Rob Sellors.

The walk was a close battle all the way between Jock Waddington and Michael George, before the latter pulled away to win by just under a minute from his arch rival and friend. David Walker claimed third place.

The vets walk was won by Tony Ball from Ruth Phillips and Ann Henrard.
