Minister poses local authority questions

There has been a mixed reaction to the change to local authority elections from annually to once every four years.

Infrastructure Minister David Cretney told the House of Keys that in 2008 the 24 authorities were asked if the new system was beneficial, but there was no overall consensus either way.

In reply to a question from Ramsey MHK Leonard Singer, he said there were arguments for changing back and maintaining the status quo, but pointed out there were only eight contested elections out of a possible total of 31 in 2008.

He said the real argument was whether the present structure, number and duties of local authorities were still relevant:
