MEMBERS of the public have been reminded to double check that kitchen appliances are turned off after use.
The warning comes after two Douglas fire crews were called to a grill pan fire in Lord Street at 9.07am this morning (Thursday).
Firefighters spent around 30 minutes at the property and were able to extinguish the fire using a Co2 extinguisher.
Station Officer John Kelly said: "Fires that start in the kitchen are an all too common cause of domestic fires. It is always a good idea to double check that you have turned off your kitchen appliances when finished."
He added: "These kinds of fires also emphasise the importance of having a working smoke alarm."
No one was injured in this morning's incident and the cooker and kitchen suffered only minor damage.
However the fire service has issued a reminder to the public to never leave grill pans unattended while cooking.
It says most grill pan fires are caused by a build-up of oil in the grill pan tray and that the smoke which comes from this can be deadly.
Members of the public are advised to do the following in the event of a grill pan fire:
- Don't take any risks. Turn off the heat if it's safe to do so. Never throw water over it as that can make injuries worse.
- Don’t tackle the fire yourself.
- Get out, stay out and call 999
